Design of a CO2 Capture System for a Foundry: Approaching a Clean Development Mechanism
Our project looks at capturing CO2 emissions by passing stack gas stream through alkaline NaOH solution, and then passing slaked lime through the resulting solution to recover limestone. Pure CO2 could further be collected in isolation by heating the limestone in the absence of air. The capture and recovery of CO2 is particularly feasible in foundries which use CO2 as a hardener while preparing castings of sand moulds. Foundries also have applications of limestone in their daily operations, as limestone is added into the cupola furnace in order to help in the removal of slag.
The method of capture and recovery proposed here, is relatively simple, based purely on chemical reactions and equilibrium. An attempt is made to design a basic recovery unit for a small-scale foundry, after collecting samples from the foundry and checking the efficiency of the process of conversion of CO2 to limestone in the laboratory.

I was offered Monbukagakusho (Japanese Government) Scholarship in 2005 to pursue research in Environmental Science especially Atmospheric and Air Pollution Modeling at University of Tsukuba, Japan during 2005-06 which I have completed successfully and awarded Pre-Doctoral degree. Also, I worked as Research Assistant at Terrestrial Environmental Research Centre, Japan for 2005-06 and assisted six research projects on Atmospheric and air pollution modeling and simulation. I was guided and advised by Dr. Fujio Kimura and Dr. Suguiura Norio of Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences at University of Tsukuba, Japan. I was recommended for SAARC Youth Award in 2006 by Dr. Sugiura Norio, University of Tsukuba, Japan for outstanding research in Environmental Science. During 1999-2002, I worked as Co-Investigator on World Bank Aided Environmental Management Capacity Building (EMCaB) Project with emphasis on River Pollution and Waste Water Treatment.
