Sacred Groves: The Last Man-Made Carbon Sink

The state of Manipur is endowed with vast endemic flora and fauna. However in due course of time the state has become one of the most threatened biodiversity rich region due to increase in the rate of resource exploitation and habitat loss. Deforestation supplemented by shifting cultivation has added to the loss of both floral and fauna diversity. Several species have gone extinct in the last few decades.
The present paper deals with the impact of climate change in the ecosystem of sacred groves in Bishnupur District resulted from human activities like deforestation, shifting cultivation and pollution. Bishnupur District have 20 sacred groves out of which more than half the number has lost its 80% biodiversity due to several anthropogenic activities and change in the climate.
